New website for the one man surf-history vault.

Dick Hoole is a massive inspiration behind The Surf Film Archive and he has a new website https://www.dickhoole.com.au. We highly recommend checking it out.

Dick was smart enough to pick up a camera in the early 70s and capture some of the magical moments happening around him. These never-to-be-repeated moments have inspired millions of surfers around Australia and the world and we are lucky that Dick had the foresight to understand how important those moments were.

At The Surf Film Archive we marvel at the dedication it must have taken to lug those heavy cameras and tripods into the remote areas like G-land, Uluwatu and Nias. The cost of buying cans of film at 200-400 per 400ft (about 11min of shooting time). How about loading a 200ft reel and swimming out to shoot 5 min, before having to come in and reload the camera. If you don’t think it’s hard try it yourself! And then, after all of that, he’d often have to wait months to get the film back to the lab in Australia, pay another $100 per reel to process it and find out if there was anything on it!

Ask Dick if he’d go back he’ll say “In an instant…..but he’ll take his iphone with him”. haha

Australian Surfing owes Dick a huge debt of gratitude and we are proud to be rescanning much of his 16mm footage.
