Three new clips have been added to the website from Trevor Elms, Alan Gourley and David Sams that were shot in Hawaii around 1966.

The clips feature many of the early surfing legends such as Greg Noll, Bruce Valluzzi, Charlie Galento, Butch Van Artsdalen, Buzzy Trent, Eddie Aikau, Peter Cole, Steve Bigler, Ben Aipa, Jose Angel , Fred Hemmings, Bobby Cloutier, Jock Sutherland, Rusty Miller, Felipe Pomar and Ricky Grigg .

The footage includes many of the great waves in Hawaii like Sunset Beach, Laneika, Waiema Bay, Himalayas, Kaena Point, Makaha, Honolulu, Oahu and North Shore.

We were fortunate enough to have David Sams and Alan Gourley review the footage and recall details and stories of the time they spent together in Hawaii.

Words from David Sams : ‘I arrived in Hawaii in mid-November 1966 and met Trevor and Alan about a week later and moved in with them at Waimea. Trevor had been in Hawaii the year before, went to Canada to work and met up with Alan who he had known since school. They purchased the Bolex 16mm movie camera and learnt to use it while travelling in Canada and the US before they both arrived in Hawaii just after me. The house we rented was right on the point at Waimea Bay.

Trevor knew Jose Angel and Buzzy Trent among others from the previous year along with John Vogler who knew many of the older surfers from California eg. Pete Peterson, Don James. We were fortunate enough to meet many legendary figures in the sport , quite a few of whom have passed away unfortunately Trevor and Alan took the 16mm film and all three of us also shot a heap of still slides. In retrospect it was definitely one of the best times of our lives with no responsibilities, surfing every day in mostly uncrowded conditions and getting some of our best (and biggest) waves.’
